Saturday’s win over Senegal in the world cup qualifier definitely lifted the momentum somewhat for Bafana Bafana after a disappointing year.

The national soccer team failed to qualify for next year’s African Cup of Nations (Afcon) after finishing a disappointing third in their group.

Coach Shakes Mashaba was on the verge of being relieved of his duties mid-June. His two mandates were to qualify for Afcon and the 2018 World Cup but the 66-year-old failed the first test.
With two qualifiers scheduled for late 2016, Safa gave him two final matches to prove that he still had the vision 2022 intact, which included qualifying for 2018 World Cup.
A win for Bafana seemed to have saved Mashaba’s job over the weekend but right after the game, he lashed out at Safa president Danny Jordaan.

A day later, Safa issued a statement that the Bafana coach had been suspended.

The Senegal win saw an inspired performance by the home team which has been lacking since 2014 when the team easily qualified for the 2015 Afcon.
With Mashaba’s head in the chopping block, it seems Safa are taking a step backwards.
