Man arrested after confessing murder
Police were still digging and searching for the buried remains of the woman.
A 38-year-old man has handed himself to police after allegedly killing his girlfriend, burning and burying her in the backyard.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said the man turned himself to the Temba police on Thursday and confessed to a murder and concealment of death he committed last year on 6 October.
“The man confessed to police he had a fight with his girlfriend on 6 October, he beat her with an object and she collapsed and died. He then burnt her and buried her in the backyard,” explained Makhubela.
On 26 October, the man went to Temba police station to report the woman missing.
“Since then police have been investigating,” he said.
As investigations continued, police received information that the woman is not missing, but has been killed.
“Police went to the man’s house at Trustfarm in Stinkwater, Hammanskraal, and did not find him,” said Makhubela.
“Later when he heard from neighbours that the police was looking for him, he then decided to turn himself to the police and told them he wanted to confess.”
Police took the man to the house late on Thursday where he pointed out a spot in the backyard where he had buried her.
Police began searching for the woman on Thursday evening and by Friday afternoon, they were still digging for the buried remains of the woman.
“We are still digging and have not found anything yet,” he said.
“What makes our search a bit difficult is the fact that he burnt the woman’s body. We are not sure to what extent, but the search is continuing.
The man is expected to appear in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
