UPDATE: Robbery victim dies in hospital

The man was still alive for about three hours after he was shot in an armed robbery at Castle Walk shopping centre.

The man who was shot and injured during an armed robbery in Erasmuskloof on Saturday, has died.

The robbery took place at Liquor City in Castle Walk shopping centre at 19:41.

Garsfontein police spokesperson Captain Ilze Jones said the man was taken to Unitas hospital in a critical condition, despite rumours on social media that the man had died on the scene.

“He was still alive at the hospital where they had to resuscitate him various times,” said Jones.

“He passed away at 23:02.”

Jones earlier said four men stormed into the Liquor City.

One of the men was armed.

A shootout occurred between the robber and the store manager and a customer was shot.

Jones said according to reports from the scene, the robbers got away in a red 1400 bakkie.

“There are no new developments,” she said.

“The investigators worked through the night to gather information.”

Jones said nothing was stolen.

“According to video footage, the suspects tried to break a glass cabinet filled with expensive alcohol but they did not succeed.”

No arrests have been made.
