Bra Sam loves his art and craft work.

Bra Sam from Mamelodi want to educate the community about art and craft.

Samuel “Bra Sam” Mokwena (53) from Mamelodi East has a passion for art and crafts.

He said art is part of his life, but his dream is to educate people about art and crafts.

His main concern was that many people don’t like art but what they don’t know is they can make a living out of it.

Mokwena, known in the community as ‘Bra Sam’, said he has been into arts and crafts for the past 30 years and did designs for a living.

Bra Sam said it all started many years ago when he liked to make drawings.

He joined the YMCA Centre in Mamelodi East and met Si Mashiangwako who taught him and others about art.

He has never looked back since.

He has hosted many art exhibitions such as Mamelodi Melody, Mamelodi Visual Arts for the department of arts and culture and has worked with the Mamelodi Art Forum Centre.

“I have been doing art my whole life and it inspires me because everything I touch turns to gold,” said Bra Sam.

“I love art because it gives me an opportunity to be creative,” he said.

Besides that he makes bags, hats, necklaces and also does paintings.

However, his biggest challenge is that residents do not support art.

“I feel like the community has to be educated about art. Art for me is passion and work. If I did not love art I would not love my work.”

“It makes me happy to see that my work is an inspiration to others,” he added.

His biggest dream is to create jobs for others.

He recently exhibited his work at Solomon Mahlangu Freedom Square.

“I paint what I see and for me art allows me to communicate with the world,” he concluded.
