A police officer was injured in a shootout with robbers on Tuesday morning at Mamelodi train station.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the officer had spotted a group of men at the station around 02:00.

“Mamelodi East police were on a routine patrol near the station when they saw a group of suspicious men who suddenly opened fire on them, hitting and wounding one of the officers.”
“A shootout ensued and the suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.”
Dlamini said the wounded officer was in a stable condition in hospital.

He said the suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of money which they had stolen from a safe at the station.
He said police it was established that the men had tied up security guards at the station before stealing the money from the safe. The guards were uninjured.
The police have launched a manhunt for the group of about eight robbers on charges armed robbery.
Dlamini urged residents with information to come forward.
“Any information that may lead to the arrest of these suspects will be rewarded.”
