A Pretoria mother has spoken out about her son’s disappearance and death last month.
Shawn Weitsz (28) went missing in the north of Pretoria on 21 April and his body was found in Onderstepoort three days later.
“We thank the people and organisations that were involved to help find my Shawn, but we must set some of the facts of his disappearance straight,” said Shawn’s mother, Sonja.
She said Shawn was last seen in the Onderstepoort area at around 19:00, contrary to previous reports that he was last seen at the Castle Carey clinic.

Shawn reportedly told his brother and sister-in-law he was going to a shop, but he never returned.
“I think the dates, time and places are important. Especially to the ones that are left behind,” Sonja wrote in an emotional letter.
“Shawn was an awesome man. Those who truly love and cared for him, know this. Those that falsely accused him and never gave him a chance, you are the empty ones. You missed his pure soul and his love and hard work.”

According to a police report, Shawn took his own life.
Sonja said people should not be quick to judge or criticise others.
“Think before you say something bad to the next person. That person is somebody with a life and a heart,” she wrote.
“You wouldn’t know how that person might feel or react or what the circumstances are. So the best is to keep your ugly thoughts to yourself.”
“Let my son Shawna rest in peace. I, his mother Sonja, his brother Raymond, Stef the man Shawn adopted in his heart as his dad and the family know the truth. Shawn suffered enough in life, let his soul rest now.”
