A new hijacking method is being used in Soshanguve, police have warned.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said Rietgat police were investigating a case of hijacking and attempted murder after a 35-year-old man, driving a 1997 Corsa Lite hatchback, was hijacked.
He said the hijacking occurred around 05:00 on Monday at Block BB in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria after the victim saw a white Toyota Fortuner at the side of the road that had apparently been involved in an accident.
Maluleka said when the victim stopped to offer assistance to the occupants, both the passenger and the driver of the Fortuner approached him.

A shot was fired at the victim, but he was not injured, he said.
Maluleka said the hijackers then pulled the victim out of his vehicle and drove off in the Corsa.
He said the hijackers then fired another two shots at an oncoming Toyota Quantum.
Maluleka said the hijackers were still at large and urged anyone with information to call the Rietgat police on 012-432-7806/07 or 08600-10111 or to SMS Crime Line on 3221.
“We also call on community members to be extra vigilant when interacting with strangers,” said Maluleka.
The Gauteng provincial police issued the following safety tips to help motorists from becoming hijacking victims.
– Stay alert. Always be aware of your surroundings and look out for anything suspicious.
– Be confident and focused. Limit distractions, such as checking or talking on your cellphone, when walking to or from your car.
– If you suspect you are being followed, make a couple of false turns. If someone is still following you, drive to the nearest police station.
– Leave enough room between you and the car in front of you to avoid being boxed in.
The following tips should be followed if a motorist is confronted by a hijacker:
– Remain calm.
– Do not argue.
– Do not make sudden gestures.
– Avoid eye contact but try to remember what the carjacker looked like by identifying and remembering special features.
– Comply with the hijacker’s directions (within reason).
– Try and get away from the area as quickly as possible.
– Don’t be a hero – your life is worth more than your car.
