Mabopane police officer recovers after a shoot-out with criminals

A Mabopane police officer is still recovering in hospital after he was shot by a suspected robber during an exchange of gun shots in Soshanguve.

A police officer shot in a gun fire exchange with a robber is recovering in hospital.

Police in Mabopane told Record that the police officer was shot last month during a robbery in Soshanguve Block NN.

Police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Maluleka said: “Both the suspect and police officer were taken to a nearby hospital after the [shoot out]. However, the police officer is still recovering in hospital.”

The police confirmed that the suspect had an accomplice and were chased by police from Winterveldt for allegedly breaking into a store.

Dimakatso Mutshweni, a resident from Block NN told Record she witnessed the incident.

“I opened the door to my house and I saw two men getting out of their car as they were chased by [about] fifteen police vehicles. Eventually one police officer was shot by the suspect,” said Mutshweni.

Other residents who witnessed the shooting said the two men were driving in a green BMW. After the armed robbery one of the perpetrators fled and hid in a resident’s home for almost two hours.

“I was inside the house and when I heard gun shots. When I came out I came across one of the suspects,” said James Mfishane.

Maluleka said the two suspects were in custody.

“Residents will be informed about the date which the two suspects will appear in court.”
