Red Bull Amaphiko Mams academy gives social entrepreneurs wings

Red Bull Amaphiko was established in 2014 to identify and develop talented people to help them achieve their full potential.

The curtain will come down on the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy in Mamelodi with a bang on Sunday.

The social entrepreneurship and talent workshop with end on 28 May with the Social Innovation festival on Tsweu Street for entrepreneurs to showcase their innovative solutions to social problems.

Amaphiko was established in 2014 out of Red Bull’s ongoing mission to identify and develop talented people and to help them achieve their full potential.

It is a global movement with chapters in Brazil and the USA but the Mamelodi leg started in the Mamelodi Community Hall on 19 May.

Amaphiko (Zulu for wings) was launched to “give wings” such as inspiration, mentorship, practical skills specifically to grassroots social entrepreneurs who are making a positive difference in their communities, and to inspire a broad audience to do the same.

Participants are exposed to development programmes such as lectures and workshops and other resources and tools they need to take themselves and their businesses to the next level.

They are also connected to a supportive worldwide community of like-minded individuals who willing to give of their skills, resources and time to help.

Marketer, Moon Walk Communications account director, Jan Moorhouse said this year, 16 of SA’s brightest social entrepreneurs gathered in Mamelodi for the 10-day programme of mentorship, inspiration and practical skills training.

“Participants will have the opportunity to connect and collaborate with mentors who include leading local and international innovators, entrepreneurs and storytellers,” said Moorhouse.

“Afterwards, they will continue working over the next 18 months with their mentors one-on-one, to further develop business and personal strategies for the plans that they will bring to life.”

Past academy participant Thabang Mabapa of Selokong Sa Dimelana (SSD), a castor oil to biofuel farming and processing business, said the support and mentorship that he received at the academy helped him realise the potential of his business and understand how it could become sustainable.

He said the academy helped him lay a solid foundation and transform SSD into a social enterprise that made an impact while driving profits.

On 28 May, Tsweu Street in Mamelodi West next to the Community Hall will be closed to traffic for the festival.
