Five robbers fled the scene after an attempted armed robbery in the west of Pretoria early Wednesday morning.
NTP Security spokesperson, Clint Kzweedy, said that the armed robbery took place at a Shell garage in Anthesis Road around 01:00.
Kzweedy said that five armed men pulled up to the garage in a white Honda.
“Four of the men got out of the vehicle and broke the garage’s shop doors down by shooting at the lock,” Kzweedy said.

“The suspects tried to get the safe open, but were unsuccessful.”
Kzweedy said the men only took cigarettes.
“When one of our response officers arrived on the scene, the robbers started shooting at him,” he said.
Kzweedy said 48 shots were fired at their officer.
“The men fled the scene in the same vehicle when our officer called for help on the radio.”
Monyie was rushed to the nearest hospital in a stable condition.

An eyewitness, who wanted to remain anonymous said he was on his way to the Shell garage when he heard the gunshots.
“When I heard the gunshots, I immediately turned around and headed for another garage,” the eyewitness said.
“As I drove past the scene I saw the suspects shooting at the NTP security officer.”
The Pretoria West police, who were also on the scene, could not be reached for comment.
