Singer finds right path in Pta
"I moved to Pretoria to pursue my studies but found Jesus.”
Singer-songwriter Menzi Hadebe has had to overcome adversity to achieve success.
Hadebe was orphaned at 15 and raised by relatives in Soweto.
“After my father’s death, I was diagnosed with diabetes,” said Hadebe adding that the loss and spending time in hospital for treatment had made him strong.
He said he enrolled for a degree in music production at Boston College but dropped out after being involved with “a wrong crowd”.

“I started bunking classes, missing deadlines for submitting assignments and I was always drunk and out partying with friends.”
“The drinking affected me so much that I couldn’t even pay rent and lost a job.”
“When I was kicked out of my apartment I was crushed.”
Hadebe said he decided to make a fresh start in Pretoria.
“That was a blessing in disguise even though this wasn’t so evident in the beginning.
“I moved to Pretoria to pursue my studies but found Jesus.

“I am a much stronger person for that.”
He said being involved in the church changed his life.
“I started singing in church and when church leaders and choir conductors realised I had talent, they encouraged me sing solo.
That opportunity opened doors for me.”
He said with his album due for release in September, he wanted to inspire people going through a dark valley.
“It’s God’s work that we are having the problems. It is how we use these problems that is important,” he said.
The gospel album, Where God is, features the soul-lifting song I Walk In Favour which he recorded last year.
