A man accused of scamming over 200 jobless people appeared in court on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said former military officer Petros Ndaba (55) appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court and would remain in custody.
“Police are investigating theft under false pretences,” said Nkoadi.
“The accused was arrested on Tuesday in Akasia.”
On Tuesday morning police found more than 200 people stranded in Karenpark, Akasia.
These youngsters, from different provinces, told police they had been tricked by a man, who referred to himself as “General”, into paying for accommodation and training to join the SA National Defence Force.
The Tshwane metro arranged for transport to take the people home to their families.
Ndaba is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday, 5 July for a formal bail application.
