No fewer than 45 people have been arrested by the Tshwane metro police since June for, among other things, stealing and hijacking cars.
Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the arrests were carried out by the K9 unit.
“Among the 42 arrests made, 14 were over stolen and hijacked vehicles that were recovered,” he said.
“Two people were caught for murder and attempted murder and 15 for dealing in and possession of drugs.”

Mahamba said the arrests were made in Centurion, Pretoria North, Silverton, Mamelodi, Hammanskraal and the Kangala region.
“Seven of the suspects were arrested for being in possession of housebreaking tools after officers received information about a white Toyota Quantum involved in the theft of motorcycles in Centurion.”
Mahamba said a Quantum minibus taxi was pulled off the road, carrying seven passengers.
“The seven were found with housebreaking equipment and balaclavas and were wearing more than one pair of pants.”

On Thursday, K9 unit officers received a tip-off about a stolen Mercedes Benz.
“The vehicle was fitted with a tracker and officers tracked the vehicle to a plot in Klerksoord, north of Pretoria.They entered the premises and found two suspects tampering with the Mercedes Benz vehicle,” said Mahamba.
The residence was searched and three more suspected stolen vehicles were found.
“Various other tools and equipment believed to be used in commission of these crimes were also found in the premises,” said Mahamba.

“The third person, who is a landlord and believed to be the lookout person, was also in the premises. All three suspects were arrested and will appear in court soon.”
Mahamba lauded the metro police officers for these arrests.
“Well done officers for the swift and brave response. The Tshwane metro police department will continue to work hard to eliminate crime and to ensure safety in the City of Tshwane,” he said.
