Taxi driver nabbed for unlicensed firearm

“The police found the Quantum on the corner of Moreri Road and Hallelujah Street in Nellmapius and searched the three occupants.”

A 36-year-old minibus taxi driver was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Nellmapius on Monday.

Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the arrest happened when officers responding to a tip-off searched three men in a white Toyota Quantum.

“The police found the Quantum parked on the corner of Moreri Road and Hallelujah Street in Nellmapius and searched the three men sitting in the vehicle.

“One of them was carrying a 9mm pistol,” said Sepato.

“The taxi driver failed to satisfactorily answer how he come to have the the unlicensed firearm.

He was immediately arrested and taken to the Silverton police station.

“The other men were not arrested but the police are still investigating the case to see if they are linked to any other crime.”

He said the driver was expected in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
