The Sunnyside police have partnered with a leading local shopping mall and the community to gain an upper hand on theft out of motor vehicles.
The crime is one of the most prevalent in the area, and the partnership would focus on joint intervention during September/October.
The campaign, anti-theft out of motor vehicles project, will be launched soon.
Although current figures show a slight reduction in theft out of motor vehicles, the local police were still not impressed.
They told Rekord that a car break-in, was one too many.

“We are aware that our precinct records among the highest number of car break-ins nationally.
A laptop is stolen from every second or third vehicle that is broken into.
Contrary to firearms, there is no law which prohibits people from leaving laptops, cell phones, handbags and wallets in their vehicles.
Even though we plead with motorists not to leave valuables in their cars, the responsibility of combating these thefts still lies with us,” said Sunnyside police acting station commander Colonel Nishan Moodley.

CPF chairperson Sandile Dube said the community had to do everything possible to the police in their fight against crime.
“The police cannot be left to fight the battle in isolation.
We will mobilise business and other stakeholders as directed by the national crime prevention strategy.
We will reclaim Sunnyside,” he concluded.
