Alleged tavern rapist’s case postponed

The case against a man accused of allegedly raping a woman at a local tavern in the CBD early in August has been postponed for further investigation.

The man (34) appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.\

“The 34-year-old woman said she was at the tavern between 01:00 and 02:00,” said Pretoria Central police spokesperson Sergeant Tsietsi Lamola.

“While in the smoking area, she was approached by a man who allegedly forced himself onto her, and then fled the scene.”

Lamola said the woman informed other patrons about the rape and they helped her to report the matter to police.

“The complaint was attended to immediately and the suspect was positively located and arrested.”

He said had been remanded in custody and was expected to appear in court on 19 September for bail application.

“The investigation continues as the court also seeks to verify the man’s nationality.”
