A 39-year-old man has opted to withdraw assault charges against 18 people accused of attacking him in Sunnyside recently.
Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the man submitted a withdrawal statement.
“During the alleged assault the victim suffered bruises, minor and deep lacerations to the head, body, and limbs after he was allegedly attacked with iron rods, knobkerries and sharp objects,” said Mavimbela.

He said the victim had reportedly been a passenger in a minibus taxi. “Its driver noticed at the time that he was being tracked by a Toyota Quantum before driving towards Sunnyside where he stopped suddenly, alighted and ran away on foot. The victim followed suit but was caught by the suspects, who were in two minibuses.”
Mavimbela said the 18 men (aged between 32 and 70) were nabbed three hours later.
“They were each granted bail of R2 000. The suspects appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today, where their case was postponed to 6 September 2017,” Mavimbela said.
