Mamelodi East police arrested 23 people during a pre–festive season clean-up operation at the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe said this was a sum total of successful arrests effected during stop and search operations, tracing of wanted suspects and patrols around hotspots.

Mbewe said the majority of arrests were for liquor-related offences and the rest included for malicious damage to property, shoplifting, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, possession of drugs, violation of protection orders and bribery.
Those arrested will be formally charged and appear in Mamelodi court soon.
“In the meantime police are intensifying crime prevention operations around hotspots and plead for co-operation and support,” he said.
