A man was arrested in Sunnyside on Tuesday for making a false statement to the police.
Sunnyside police spokesperson captain, Daniel Mavimbela, said the man walked into the Sunnyside police station on Monday morning and pleaded with the police to help him recover his stolen laptop.
“The man is now in hot water after it was discovered he had allegedly opened the false case of robbery with the intent of initiating a false insurance claim.
The 20-year-old student allegedly told the police he had been robbed of his laptop by three armed men somewhere along Jorrisen Street, Sunnyside, last Thursday,” said Mavimbela.

“Investigators reportedly found the man had in fact lent the laptop to his brother. The duo is believed to have reconciled that the suspect would inform the police that he had lost the laptop during a robbery, a move that would lead to the suspect being charged with perjury, an offence that carries a sentence of up to three years imprisonment.
Persons who intend to open false cases should begin to think twice. In fact, misleading the police with false information is equivalent to wasting the resources of our community because the police are a resource. This is the second case in as many months in which someone was charged for giving false information to the police in Sunnyside.”
The man is expected in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
