Alleged tavern rapist to apply for bail

“While in the smoking area, she was approached by a man who allegedly forced himself onto her, and then fled the scene.”

A 32-year-old man accused of raping a woman in a tavern is expected to appear again in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The man appeared in court late last month and is expected to apply for bail when he appears on Tuesday.

In the last court appearance, the case was postponed for further investigation to determine the man’s nationality.

“The 34-year-old victim said she was at the tavern between 01:00 and 02:00. While in the smoking area, she was approached by a man who allegedly forced himself onto her, and then fled the scene,” said Pretoria Central police spokesperson Sergeant Tsietsi Lamola.

Lamola said the woman informed other patrons about the rape and they helped her to report the matter to police.

“The complaint was attended to immediately and the suspect was located and arrested.”

The man remains in police custody.
