A 33-year-old police officer was shot and wounded during a gunfight with alleged hijackers in Hammanskraal on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said Constable William Mangwane (33), who is a member of the public order police unit, was sitting in a vehicle in Stinkwater near Nkandla informal settlement with his girlfriend on Sunday evening when three men knocked on his window.
“When he got out of the car, one of the three men shot at him in his upper body. The off-duty policeman also fired back. The suspects ran away without taking his car. He was seriously wounded and the girlfriend immediately contacted the cop’s friend who rushed to the scene and they both drove him to Jubilee hospital,” said Moremi.
Netcare 911 spokesperson, Nick Dollman, said at about 23:20 on Sunday, Netcare 911 responded to reports that an off-duty police officer had been shot in the Hammanskraal area.

“Reports allege that the off-duty officer had been shot and was rushed by colleagues to a local community hospital where he was attended to by doctors and staff in the emergency unit. Netcare 911 paramedics were then called to assist,” he said.
“The 33-year-old man had been shot more than once and due to the very serious nature of his injuries, the advanced life support paramedic opted to call for the Netcare 911 helicopter,” he said.

Dollman said the patient was stabilised and then airlifted to a specialised trauma unit in Johannesburg for the urgent medical care he required.
“The incident and preceding events will form part of a police investigation. Members of the SAPS were at the community hospital,” said Moremi.
The victim’s car was taken to Temba SAPS, and no arrest has been made yet.
