A man accused of raping his ex-girlfriend appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
The man was arrested on a charge of rape, Sunnyside police confirmed. He cannot be named as he has yet to plead and he remains in police custody.
Spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the 25-year-old was arrested in Sunnyside on Sunday after a manhunt.
Mavimbela said the victim was a lesbian and the alleged rapist was from one of the central African countries where same-sex relationships was an abomination.
He said the victim (24) was visiting a friend where the suspect and the friend’s boyfriend were also present.
“It is reported that the alleged rape occurred after the couple [the friend and her boyfriend] left the flat to buy food,” said Mavimbela.
Sunnyside police station commander Brigadier Ramakamakama Kekana condemned the incident.
“It is unacceptable that the suspect, in spite of the victim reportedly making it clear to him that she no longer dated men, saw it fit to enforce his own cultural beliefs on a vulnerable woman.”
The accused is expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on the 27 September for confirmation of his address and for the court to establish whether he has any previous convictions.
