Ismail Khan was then rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition where he died on Sunday afternoon.
Social cohesion activist Yusuf Abramjee said Khan and another man had intervened in the house robbery in Laudium.
“A group of robbers attacked a family home while the residents were having a braai,” Abramjee said.
Apparently, the robbers were loading electronic equipment into their getaway vehicle when two passers-by – Khan and his friend – saw what was happening and confronted the men.
Abramjee said this led to a shootout in which Khan was wounded.
The robbers fled the scene but abandoned their getaway vehicle just outside Laudium.
“It appeared they decided to flee on foot. All the stolen electronic items were found inside their vehicle,” Abramjee said.
“Police chased some of the suspects into the mountain where they disappeared near Atteridgeville.”
No arrests have been made and the hunt for the four suspect is still on.

Police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma confirmed that two other victims who were shot had been released from hospital.
“The complainant said that four suspects entered the premises while family and friends were having a braai. They were then forced into the kitchen by pointing them with firearms,” said Huma.
She said that the complainant was assaulted with a firearm by the suspects who hit her over the head.
“They ransacked the house and took jewellery, cell phones, a TV set and keys to the owner’s bakkie.”
Huma said as the suspects fled they opened fire on guests who were also walking onto the premises.
“They shot the guests who were coming in the yard, wounding two of them in the upper body.”
She said police found the white Renault with no registration on the R55 Schurweberg road.
A case of house robbery was opened.
