The killers of a Laudium hero were still on the run by Monday while a manhunt by Centurion police continued.
The four men attacked a family who were having a braai in Laudium at the weekend.
When a young bystander tried to intervene, the culprits shot him in the head.
Ismail Khan (31) died from his wounds the next day.
Police spokesperson Agnes Huma said another man with Khan was also wounded and rushed to a nearby hospital.

She said the intruders entered the yard as the family was having a braai in the back yard.
“They forced the family at gunpoint into the kitchen.”

One of the women was hit over the head with a firearm.
“They ransacked the house and took jewellery, cellphones, a television set and the keys to the family’ bakkie,” said Huma.
As the attackers were loading their loot, they were disturbed by people entering the premises.
Social activist Yusuf Abramjee these were residents who had responded to a whatsapp alert about the robbery.
Khan and the second man were among the group and confronted the robbers.
The attackers opened fire, wounding Khan in the head and the second man in the upper body.
The robbers fled the scene and abandoned their getaway vehicle just outside Laudium.
“It appeared they decided to flee on foot. All the stolen electronic items were found inside their vehicle,” Abramjee said.
“Police chased some of the suspects into the mountain where they disappeared near Atteridgeville.”

She said police found the white Renault with no registration on the R55 Schurweberg road.

No arrests had been made by Monday and the hunt for the four suspect was continuing.
A spike in armed robberies hit Laudium towards the end of last year.
“Crime has escalated massively in the area,” said a resident who asked not be named.
At the time, he said two or three armed robbery dockets were being opened every week.
The community had approached community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane for help, said residents.
Even complexes had become unsafe.
In a brazen attack on a Sunday, four armed men stormed a residential complex and overpowered the security guard.

A local said they went on to steal undisclosed amount of money from a house.
Even supermarkets had become targets and at least one had been robbed in broad daylight.
The eight men were heavily armed and also robbed customers inside.
