Five armed robbers fled empty-handed after a failed cash-in-transit heist in Soshanguve on Monday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said the gang blocked a Fidelity Security Van’s way in a silver BMW around 07:00.
“They started shooting at the van with rifles and robbed the two guards off their firearms,” said Nkoadi.
“One of the guards was injured when the attackers assaulted him, but no fatalities were reported.”
A police source said the robbers wore bulletproof vests and their car had a fake registration number.
Their robbery attempt was interrupted by a police van on patrol.

They fled when they saw the vehicle.
The robbers were targeting a Fidelity Security vehicle that was collecting cash in the area.
Nkoadi said police were investigating and he urged anyone with information on the matter to come forward.
The attempted cash-in-transit heist was the second within two weeks in the Tshwane North Cluster police area.
Last weekend, a cash-in-transit heist was committed on the R101 near Babelegi Industries in Hammanskraal.
Police spokesperson Captain Samuel Sebola said a G4S van was attacked when picking up cash at a garage near Babelegi Industries in Temba.
“The suspects arrived at the garage in four vehicles driving at high speed,” he said.
“They blocked the G4S vehicle and 14 males came out of the three vehicles armed with rifles and pistols and started shooting randomly. Explosives were thrown to the G4S van, ripping it open on the left side,”
The robbers got into the truck and took boxes of cash.
“There were two security guards in the van. One of them got injured on the left arm,” he said.
Police found 55 empty cartridges from a rifle and two live rounds and 8 cartridges from a 9mm pistol at the scene.
“Both security guards’ firearms were taken. Explosive experts and other role players were summoned to the scene,” he said.
He said the robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Within hours of the heist, one of the getaway vehicles was found abandoned on the outskirts of the township.
G4S spokesperson Wendy Hardy confirmed that a G4S guard was robbed while performing a cash collection service.

“During the attack, the two security officers sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment,” said Hardy.
“The suspects fled the scene with the money and a G4S firearm.”
The company was conducting an internal probe, she said.
Sebola said: “No arrests have been made yet, but an investigation is underway.”
