Centurion police recover R70 000 bicycle

“Two cyclists were robbed of their bicycles at gunpoint.”

Erasmia police have warned Centurion cyclists to be on the alert.

Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said the police had noticed a recent spike in reports of cyclists being robbed.

“The police are investigating robbery cases in which specialised bicycles valued at close to R100 000 had been taken,” said Moloto.

He advised recreational and professional cyclists to ride in groups to prevent them from being seen as soft targets by robbers.

He said on Wednesday the police had arrested a man in his 20’s in the Mooiplaas informal settlement in Centurion who was in possession of a suspected stolen mountain bike.

He said the police investigation yielded positive results when the suspect was spotted and the stolen property recovered at his residence.

Moloto said in August and September the police received reports of cyclists being robbed along the M26 and R511 roads.

“The dockets are open for investigation,” said Moloto.

According to Moloto, the latest incident was reported on Sunday 8 October along the M26.

“Two cyclists were robbed of their bicycles at gunpoint.”

“The police will continue to be more visible in all our routes,” Moloto warned.

The arrested will appear in the Attridgeville magistrate’s court soon.

Bicycle experts in Centurion, Cajees Cycles said the retrieved Cannondale Scalpel mountain bike cost around R70 000.
