The murder rate in Mamelodi East has dropped – but is still the highest in Pretoria and areas east of the city.
This emerged from the latest national crime statistics released by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday.
Here is a breakdown of crime in the various areas:
Mamelodi East’s contact crimes rose by 7.6 percent. The area’s murder rate dropped by 3.6 percent, but remained the highest in the east of Pretoria with 53 murders reported from March 2016 to April 2017.

The area had a 6.3 percent rise in sexual offences, while Mamelodi West had a 16.7 percent rise in the same category.
The reports showed that Brooklyn’s property-related crimes (such as burglary and theft) had risen by 21.7 percent. Sexual offences had dropped by 28.6 percent.

Garsfontein had the highest rise in aggravated robberies (60 percent) followed by Silverton (50 percent). Silverton’s sexual related crime rose by 2.9 percent, contact crime increased by 17.4 percent while illegal possession of firearms and ammunition fell by 28 percent.
Drug-related crimes in Sunnyside increased by 32.8 percent and sexual offences fell by 7.9 percent.
The area experienced a 0.5 percent drop in property-related crimes such as shoplifting. Commercial crimes decreased by 1.3 percent.
Pretoria Central experienced a 28.6 percent rise in murders. Reported rape incidents decreased by 8.8 percent while drug-related crimes dropped with 3.6 percent.
Truck hijackings decreased by 50 percent, while crimes such as arson and malicious damage to property increased by 11.8 percent.
Central Pretoria experienced an increase in the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
