UPDATE: Armed security officer shot dead in Centurion

Security officer shot dead while waiting for a colleague.

An armed security officer was shot and killed while waiting to change shifts in Olivenhoutbosch on Wednesday evening.

Netcare 911 emergency medical service spokesperson Nick Dollman said paramedics were called to aid the officer who had been shot and robbed of his firearm.

“Reports from the scene were that the victim was in his security vehicle at 18:05 on a gravel road between the veld and the informal settlement in Olivenhoutbosch, Centurion,” Dollman said.

He said the victim died at the scene.

“Documentation pertaining to his death was completed by Netcare 911 and handed over to authorities on the scene,” he said.

Olivenhoutbosch police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the 33-year-old victim, who was employed by TRSS security, was waiting to change shifts with a colleague.

“Two unknown African males came with a handgun and shot him in the body while he was still in the vehicle,” she said.

Selepe said the suspects fled on foot.

“They took his handgun, a Norinco 9mm pistol with serial number 48112844, and left him,” Selepe said.

She said a case of murder had been opened.
