Some areas in Pta focal points for farm attacks

There has been an increase in farm attacks over the past three years and an increase of 28,3% since 2014/15.

Statistics show that some areas in Pretoria are focal points for farm attacks.

This information recently came out in a police submission.

Dr. Pieter Groenewald, leader of the Vryheidsfront Plus said after the police initially refused to make the crime statistics on farm murders and attacks available but eventually relented recently upon request.

According to the report, Brits, Hercules, Sundra, Rustenburg, Cullinan, Hartbeespoortdam, Kameeldrift and Erasmia were focal points for farm attacks.

Farm murders increased by 27.5% and farm attacks by 22.9%.

It said in the year under review there were 74 farm murders (58 in 2015/16) and 638 attacks (519 in 2015/16).

This followed the release of the latest national crime statistics on Tuesday for the 12 months to April this year this week by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula.

According to the statistics given to Groenewalt, there were no less than 1 700 farm murders and 12 245 farm attacks since 1996/1997.

There has been a 28,3% increase in farm attacks since 2014/15.

Groenewalt said the overall murder rate in South Africa was now 34 per 100 000 of the population but 130 per 100 000 for farmers.
