Weapons and illegal items were seized when police raided two junior secondary schools in Soshanguve recently.
Police spokesperson Captain Steven Maluleka said Rietgat police raided Kgotlelelang and as well as Funekile junior secondary schools where an assortment of objects such as screwdrivers, pepper spray containers, condoms, mirrors and knives were seized.
Police also used the opportunity to talk to the learners about crime in schools.
“We want to make our intentions clear of keeping township schools clean and free from drugs and criminal elements,” Maluleka said.
He said eight learners were arrested – three for possession of dagga and five for gambling.
Maluleka warned the learners to stop doing illegal activities or else suffer the full might of the law.
“About 28 cell phones were found and seized from learners but kept safe pending their parents’ visit to the school,” he said.

“Principals from both schools appreciated the unannounced visits by the police and vowed to support the initiative each time the police show up.”
The search was conducted with the assistance of the K9 unit, Gauteng education department, community policing forum (CPF), youth desk and school patrollers.
The Gauteng education’s representative David Moses assured police that proper disciplinary action would be taken against the transgressors at an urgent school governing body’s (SGB) meeting to be convened soon.
