A Pretoria prison inmate was seen on video counting money from his prison cell.
In the video, the inmate can be seen counting R100 notes while saying “Nna ke ja nyuku, ke ja nyuku yaka” (I am eating money, I am eating my money.).
The money he was counting amounts to R2 700.
The department of correctional services noted its concern about the video footage.

Department spokesperson Ofentse Morwane said the video constituted a serious breach of security and contravened the department’s policy regarding a cashless system for prison inmates.

“A preliminary investigation has revealed that the offender is incarcerated at Kgosi Mampuru Central. The offender in question has been identified and segregated as a full investigation is currently underway.”
Morwane told Rekord appropriate disciplinary steps will to be taken against the inmate as well as any officials who might be involved.
“Regulations stipulate that inmates may not be in the possession of any cash,” he said.
