Motorists should be careful of smash-and-grab crimes in the CBD, police have warned.
Pretoria Central police station had nine reported cases in the past two weeks and spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said bakkies with canopies were mostly targeted.
“Drivers need to make sure that the canopy is locked, if possible have someone who can stay at the back of the van to look after valuables,” she said.
Selepe said the roads affected by such crimes were often around places were criminals could quickly get away.
She said Marabastad, Berea as well as Proes and Struben streets intersections were some of the areas that were targeted.

“We advise motorists to take caution when driving on DF Malan, Eeufees, Fountains circle, Thabo Sehume, Boom, Eskia Mphahlele, Francis Baard, Sisulu and Paul Kruger streets,” she said.
Police advised motorists to leave enough space between themselves and the vehicle in front them. This will should afford them leverage to drive off if necessary.
“Always remain focused on the road, do not be distracted by any electronic devices or gadgets as this can attract criminals,” she said.
“Beware of street hawkers and pamphlet distributors; do not open windows for them. Be vigilant at all times.”
