UPDATE: Sanco march called off
Sanco spokesperson Sam Matlala said some taxi operators will also join in on the march.
A SA national civic organisation (Sanco) protest over service delivery has been called off at the last minute.
Regional spokesperson Sam Matlala said the police had delivered a memo to indicate the metro had not approved the march.
“We applied for a march on time and everything was in order,” Matlala said.
“We are not going to give up because we know that this was a deliberate act to try and divide the members.”

Sanco was scheduled to march to the Union Buildings from Marabastad at 11:00.
Matlala said some taxi operators had also indicated an interest in joining the march.
“The march was against the one billing system, formalisation of the informal settlements, fast-tracking service delivery and calling for the scrapping of traffic fines for taxi drivers.”

He said monthly water and electricity bills were too high.
“We don’t understand why the municipality is using estimations to bill the residents when it can take the readings and thus avoid over-charging people.”
Sanco said it would meet next week to discuss the way forward.
“We are going to remain law-abiding citizens and not behave in a rowdy manner.”
