Metrorail operations have been suspended in Mamelodi because of attacks on train workers.
Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) spokesperson Lilian Mofokeng on Wednesday announced that the Metrorail suspended operations in Mamelodi.
“This is due to train hijackings, staff assaults and attacks against commuter trains in the area,” she said.

Mofokeng said there has been more than ten attacks in less than a week.
“No train service will run from Koedoespoort and Pienaarspoort stations.”
Metrorail further said there are no alternative plans for commuters.
Commuters with valid tickets for the month or weekly tickets can claim refunds from the Rissik, Haartebees and Pretoria stations, Mofokeng said.

She said it wasn’t clear how long would operations would remain suspended.
Earlier this week, United National Transport Union (Untu) spokesperson Sonja Carsten revealed that train operators were resigning from Metrorail at an alarming rate out of fear for their lives.
Carsten said train workers have been subjected to physical attacks by commuters frustrated by trains frequently being late.

“Drivers are are resigning at an alarming rate. They fear for their lives because they will never know what might happen next.”
According to the drivers, the dangerous route is the one between Pretoria and Johannesburg.
