WATCH: Seven years of flowing sewage in Silverton
“Every time they come out to fix the problem, it flares up again a week later.”
A Silverton resident is “sick and tired” of living with the stench from a burst sewer only a few metres away from his house.
Barney Pretorius said raw sewage had been flowing out of a manhole in Brummer Street for about seven years.
“I sometimes cannot breathe when I am in my house,” said Pretorius.
“Even if I sell my house, nobody would want to buy property in such a horrible street.”

He said the problem started only a few weeks after he bought the house.
“I have complained several times to our councillor and the city. Every time they come out to fix the problem, it flares up again a week later.”
Pretorius said the work done to stop the flow of sewage was of poor quality.
“I want a permanent solution,” he told Rekord. “If the city cannot fix the problem, it must hire a company capable of doing so.”
“It’s also very unhygienic because the sewage is flowing into a stormwater drain, which is meant to take the water to rivers and then back to the taps in our houses.”

Local councillor Freddie Pienaar said he was aware of the problem.
Pienaar said he would liaise with his fellow councillors in the area to identify all affected areas to find a permanent solution.
He said many sewage holes had been overflowing as of late and this could be because of illegal dumping in the various areas.
“The rubbish clogs manholes as it builds up causing them to overflow.”
