Music genius Tabane passes on

He founded the group, Malombo Jazz Men in the early 1960s and mentored a number of musicians, including Dr. Galane, Julian Bahula, and others.

Mamelodi’s pride and Malombo jazz music founder Dr Philip Tabane, has fallen.

The 84-year-old passed on on Friday afternoon after two days in hospital.

Family spokesperson Dr Sello Galane said Tabane would be missed.

“He created the malombo music genre and shaped the industry and thinking,” he said.

He said Dr Tabane was like a father.

“We owe it to him to continue where he left off,” he said.

Dr Tabane was known for songs such as Muvhango and Ngwa Walela.

Bahula, who was also Dr. Tabane’s friend described the father of malombo as a gift to the world.

“He paved the way for many musicians…The world was fortunate and blessed to have him,” he said.

“It is difficult to accept that he is gone.”

Dr. Tabane was born in Mamelodi, and leaves behind his children and grandchildren.
