Metro dedicates millions to north infrastructure
12 600 water connections are expected to be made to households, 3 943 sewer connections, 6 800 electricity connections, 50 kilometres of new stormwater networks and 56 kilometres of newly tarred roads.
Millions of rands have been dedicated to infrastructure upgrades and new electricity connections in several areas in the north of Pretoria in the Tshwane metro’s latest budget.
During his budget speech mayor Solly Msimanga said the “major” infrastructure projects would focus on water and sanitation, electricity, roads and stormwater as well as housing.
12 600 water connections are expected to be made to households, 3 943 sewer connections, 6 800 electricity connections, 50km of new stormwater networks and 56km of newly tarred roads.
Utility services and infrastructure MMC Darryl Moss said there would be a total of nine water projects, 10 sewer projects and one table top structure installed.
Three piped water network projects are expected to be carried out over a period of two years and will cost R17,5 million in Gatsebe, R15 million in Klerksoord and R20 million in Mabopane.
Water provision is expected to be made in five areas: Kopanong – phase two, Rama City, Mabopane X1, Winterveldt and Soshanguve South X24.

The water provision projects would span over different amounts of time – in Kopanong three years, at a cost of R47 million, over a year in Rama City at R5 million, a year in Mabopane, costing R7,5 million, three years in Winterveld at a cost of R62 million and, already in the pipeline is Soshanguve South at R9 million.
A bulk sewer line is also scheduled to be installed in Winterveldt ward 25 at a value of R120 million over three years.
Another costly infrastructure installation will be that of bulk sewers in Winterveldt, set to cost R83 million over a three-year period.
A total of R80,5 million was also dedicated to sewer reticulation in Gatsebe, Klerksoord and Winterveldt expected to take two years.
R17, 5 million was dedicated to Gatsebe, R23 million to Klerksood and R40 million to Winterveldt.
Moss said that the budget had also made provision for sewers set to be installed in four areas – Kopanong X1, Mabopane X1, Rama City and Soshanguve South X24.
The projects are expected to commence in the current financial year – 2018/19 – and continue into the next – 2019/20.
The amount dedicated to the Kopanong sewer provision was R30 million, R7,5 million to Mabopane, R5 million to Rama City and R18 million to Soshanguve South.
The city is also set to install toilet-top structures in Gatsebe over two years at a cost of R30 million.
Rama City will also get a new reservoir costing R70 million and the replacement of all defective sewers in the region for R170 million. Two new substations in Soshanguve set to cost R64 million and R46 million – over three years would be erected.
“Areas which were previously without electricity can look forward to connections as we will be providing electricity to areas currently unserviced,” Moss said.
Streetlights and high mast lighting were also factored in at a cost of R52 million over three years.
