North primary school a dumping site for residents
“It is time for the department to do something.”
A damaged fence and illegal dumping at Phumzile Primary School in Soshanguve block H have raised safety concerns among parents and local residents.
“When there are heavy storms and heavy winds, waste ends up in our yards because of the broken fence,” resident Andris Skhosana told Rekord.
Skhosana blamed this on the school’s learners using the fence as a gate.
“The learners use the fence to bunk school. This is very bad as the fence is faulty and sharp. This is very unsafe.”
Another resident, Sbonelo Buthelezi, said the fence had been broken for “many years”.
“I attended Phumzile Primary and now my children are there,” said Buthelezi.

“The fence has not changed since.”
He said parents were promised at meetings that the school would attend to the matter.
“The principal promised us that once the department gives the go-ahead, the fence will be fixed,” he said.
“As a parent, to see so much waste around the school my children attend is not good.”
School principal Amos Ndimande said plans to replace the school fence were in place, pending head office’s approval.
“Surveys have already been done for replacing the school’s fence,” he told Rekord.
“I have put up a sign in the past to tell residents to stop dumping rubbish around the school, but someone removed it.”
Another resident Emily Ngubeni said she was afraid her grandchildren would cut themselves when climbing over the fence.
“It has been very long that the fence has been like this,” said Ngubeni.
“It is time for the department to do something.”
The department of basic education could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
