How to write off your metro debt
And what to do if you can’t pay off your municipal debt.
Tshwane residents can have their municipal debt written off – if they qualify to be registered under the city’s indigent programme.
According to the city’s website, the indigent programme is a service which lets poor households register to have access to basic municipal services.
Such households qualify for 12 kilolitres of free water and 100kW of free electricity each month. They are also exempted from rates as well as taxes, and qualify for waste and sewage removal.
Households can also make alternative arrangements regarding outstanding debt.
Such households would have to make an upfront payment of at least 60 percent of the total amount owed before any further arrangements could be made.
“The balance is put on an arrangement plan no longer than 24 months for residents and six months for businesses,” says Mare-Lize Fourie, Tshwane MMC for finance.
To arrange this, the person intending to make such an arrangement should visit their local municipal offices with a copy of their ID.
If it is a business, a business proxy would also be necessary.
“Upon payment of the upfront amount, an acknowledgement of debt document is produced for the debtor to sign off,” Fourie said.
