Gauteng NPOs receive funding after delays
Social development MEC said she is pleased that 92 percent of the subsidised NPOs have received their funding.
The Gauteng provincial government announced on Wednesday that it had paid R348 million to non-profit organisations (NPOs) in the province.
This comes after the DA social development spokesperson Refiloe Nt’sekhe said it was concerning that out of the R2 774 257 000 allocated for funding of NPOs, as of 18 May 2018, only R157 834 042 had been paid over.

Nt’sekhe said there had been a delay in the approval of the budget to be transferred to NPOs. The budget was submitted in March 2018, but had only been approved in April 2018.
The delays in payment of NPOs impacted negatively on their day-to-day operations as they had no other means of income.
“Our poor people who rely on the services offered by these NPOs cannot be held to ransom by the department’s chronic mismanagement,” Nt’sekhe said.

“A total of 2 064 NPOs have been paid and 316 are still outstanding,” she said.
“We remain concerned that the delay in NPO payment has affected service delivery. However, we appreciate the co-operation of our NPOs who have responded positively to our request for compliance, and I am grateful that the process is unfolding as swiftly as possible.”
