More than half of reported potholes fixed, says metro
A total of 141 complaints relating to potholes were received by the metro between May and June.
More than half of all the potholes reported by residents in the north of Pretoria have been fixed, the metro said.
“To date, 58 percent of the complaints have been attended to,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
A total of 141 potholes complaints were received by the metro between May and June, of which the metro has repaired 83 at the time of going to print.
Mashigo explained that the delay in repairing the potholes was because of an asphalt shortage.
“We had a challenge of a supply of asphalt from an external service provider,” he said.
“A cold mix asphalt is available and priority in terms of work allocation is given to repairing potholes.”
Potholes have since been repaired in several neighbourhoods in the north, including Akasia, Theresapark, Nina Park, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa.
Mashigo told Rekord that potholes were categorised according to their sizes and then grouped into two categories, namely small to medium and large potholes.
Small to medium potholes were repaired with a cold mix asphalt, which was available in bags. Large ones were repaired using a hot mix asphalt.
The method for repairing small to medium potholes:
– Preparation of a hole by removing all loose and unbonded material.
– Application of binder in a hole (bitumen emulsion).
– Placement and compaction cold mix asphalt.
The method for repairing large potholes:
– Surface preparation: marking and cutting of the surfacing and the removal of all failed material as well as any material that contains excessive moisture. Replace with gravel material that has preferably been stabilised with cement to improve the structural capacity. Compact the material as densely as possible in layers, not exceeding 100mm.
– Application of binder (bitumen emulsion).
– Placement and compaction cold mix asphalt.
– Sealing of joints using emulsion.
