UPDATE: Two to three days to restore power to the east suburbs – metro

"It is presumed that the probable cause of fire may be that a panel inside the substation tripped due to a fault and burnt as a result of the severity of the fault, nevertheless investigations will reveal the actual cause."

Residents whose areas are serviced by the Wapadrand substation that burned down were still without electricity on Wednesday.

The substation caught fire on Tuesday leading to several suburbs being plunged into darkness.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said emergency services trucks were dispatched timeously to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze, however, the raging fire gutted the substation.

Although the city’s technical team is currently working on the temporary solution to restore power, it is estimated that power restoration may take about two to three days.
