Pretorians urged to keep properties clean

Pretorians were urged to keep their sidewalks and properties clean.
This follows after two full garbage trucks’ rubbish were collected during a clean-up of several open fields in the west of Pretoria last Tuesday.
Residents have been complaining of the open fields in question, saying they were littered with drug paraphernalia and have been turned into “public toilets” by vagrants.

The clean-up operation was organised by DA ward councillor Elma Nel and involved both residents and municipal workers.
“We are supposed to be proud of our town, but how can one be proud if it is dirty?” she asked.
“Which is why we decided to clean up the area.”

Nel said empty fields and properties were a big problem in her ward.
During the operation, they also also removed several mattresses and bedding belonging to illegal squatters.
“These fields and properties usually quickly become littered with garbage and is often a crime hot spot for drugs,” she said.

Johan Cloete was one of the residents who helped in the clean-up.
He described the day as a “huge success”.
“One of the things we have noticed during the clean-up was the poor maintenance of sidewalks,” he said.
He urged residents to please keep their sidewalks clean.
“If every resident makes an effort to clean their sidewalk, the area will already be much cleaner,” he said.
Nel said they have also cleaned fields where people were squatting illegally.
“The number of squatter camps in my ward had become a grave concern,” she said.
