North school celebrates 40 years of excellence

“This is the school that has opened so many doors for us."

A school in the north has celebrated its 40th anniversary during a glittering function attended by locals, former and current learners.

Present and retired teachers shared their fond memories of their times at Soshanguve high school during the event held last Saturday.

The school, known for its excellence in soccer, debate, music and other extramural activities, went through many phases before it could settle at its present location.

The school was once accommodated at Rhulani secondary school in block H before moving to Lethabong secondary school in block F. It later relocated to the current Tshwane University of Technology north campus, before securing a site at an old building in block FF.

Soon-to-retire principal Victoria Ledwaba said she was the first teacher to be employed at the school and was appointed as principal in 1996.

“In 1983, my girls’ choir was crowned national champions. Up to this day, I never will forget that day. It was a big moment for me as a woman, especially in that era. It shows that if you put efforts in your work you can achieve anything,” said Ledwaba.

Former debating champion at the school, Michelle Mabuya, said the school has contributed to her being a confident public speaker.

“I can safely say that this school is the reason why I can boldly stand in front of you and speak eloquently and bravely,” said Mabuya.

She said the current learners should grasp all opportunities presented by the school.

“This is the school that has opened so many doors for us. I am thriving in my business because of the kind of school I come from. In addition, this school produces great leaders. We know this because of the prolific educators that are found in this school.”

Former learner and parent Sonto Maluleka said she completed her matric at Soshanguve secondary school in 1996.

“I am also a product of this school, therefore, I can safely say this is one of the best schools in Soshanguve because of where I am now in life,” Maluleka said.

Oreinele Matjene (16) said: “I am a commerce learner and the school runs after-school programmes which have helped me to improve academically. As a commerce learner, I get recognition in the school unlike other schools where only science is given a priority.”
