Two north girls lending a helping hand to less privileged

"Helping those in need makes us feel better about ourselves."

Two girls with hearts of gold in Akasia, north of Pretoria, are making a difference in their community.

Grade 12 Iona Convent School learners Reitumetse Letlape and Karabo Makgopela’s company Feminist designs and rents out evening gowns.

“With some of the profits we make from the business we donate and lend out matric dance dresses to unprivileged girls,” said Letlape.

They also support unprivileged families where they can with necessities like groceries and clothes.

“Being exposed to underprivileged people was a driving force since we aren’t really in their shoes so we can’t relate emotionally but we can reduce the pain by being there to help them secure their basic needs. And also, underprivileged female matriculants deserve to attend their matric dance and we strongly feel that that shouldn’t be taken away from them due to their financial positions,” she said.

Makgopela said though their company was still young, they hoped to help as many people as possible.

“We are organising a sanitary pad drive but need catalysts like sponsors to enable us to help as many people as we’d love to,” she said.

“Helping those in need makes us feel better about ourselves and that we are following the concept of Ubuntu. In order to succeed in life, you need the help of others. Also, succeeding alone isn’t as joyful as succeeding along with others.”
