UPDATE: Irene animal carcass dumpsite yet to be addressed by metro
Images from the site depict cow horns, entrails and chicken carcasses – all which are spilling onto the road, making it difficult for motorists to pass.
The illegal dumping site that had Irene residents up in arms last month is yet to be attended to by the Tshwane metro.
“They [Tshwane] have not done anything,” resident Gerda du Plessis said.
The dumping site, located on the road to Du Plessis’ house and about 2km away from the St George’s Hotel, is being used to dispose of animal carcasses and entrails.

Du Plessis said the dumping site was “even worse” than it was in the beginning.
In September, she told Rekord that the stench from the illegal dumping site was unacceptable.
“When we drive to and from work, the smell is unbearable,” Du Plessis said.
Images from the site depict cow horns, entrails and chicken carcasses – all which are spilling onto the road, making it difficult for motorists to pass.
When Rekord reported on the story in September, it was understood the road was also being used by residents from a nearby informal settlement.
Du Plessis added that she believed people from the settlement cooked and ate the animal remains.
“The waste will lie here for a few weeks and then it will be gone. We suspect it is being eaten,” she said.
She added that she and her husband reported the situation to the ward councillor and metro in May.
Gert Visser – the local ward councillor – told Rekord he had escalated the problem to the metro and expressed his frustration about it.

Visser had previously called on the community to aid with information on who was responsible for the “atrocious act” of dumping the animal remains.
The public was also encouraged to contact the metro regarding environmental and health-related issues similar to this, adding that “Whoever did this has no moral conscience”.
The Tshwane metro was yet to respond to enquiries at the time of going to press.
