East gala event promotes literacy

Daniel Chihinga (10) from Madzanga Primary School won the spelling bee competition after correctly spelling the word “tonsillectomy”.

The Mthethwa family development foundation hosted a gala dinner that saw learners from various schools competing in debates, a spelling bee, drama, poetry and reading competitions on 3 November.

The dinner was hosted at the Pretoria botanical gardens and was aimed at creating an opportunity for learners from rural areas to compete and share on a bigger scale.

Spokesperson Noks Ndaba said the event targeted mainly learners who came from rural schools.

“It’s meant to inspire top achievers of its various programmes within our schools, the gala dinner has brought an exciting element of inspiring good competition among the learners.”

The family foundation annual event was established in 2012 as a way to promote literacy and encouraging learners to share ideas openly.

Two alumni learners  shared their personal stories of how the programme has impacted them.

Lehlogonolo Khoza from Nchuncheko primary school said the foundation’s programmes have helped improve his language: “I have been a top achiever because of the foundation I got from these programmes,” he said.

Another beneficiary Bonginkosi Tjiane said the foundation opened doors for him and had taught him not to be dependent on the government for solutions.

“I know the government is helping us with grants, but for how long? Without MFDF I have no future, they want us to live a better life.”
