The Tshwane metro was hoping that a clean-up operation at the polluted Hennops River, held on Monday morning, would become a regular event.
The clean-up involved various interested parties from the Tshwane metro and residents.
It kicked off in South Street on Monday morning, according to utility services and infrastructure MMC Darryl Moss.
“Although the metro is not responsible for most of the pollution in the city, we still have an obligation from an environmental point of view to look after our environment,” he said.

“We are really pleased to now see the involvement by the community. Ultimately, this is where most of these projects begin and end.”
Moss said the metro aims to do the best that they can with dealing with the problem.
“That is part of what we are doing today – with the recent rain all the garbage came down with the river,” he said.

Plans were already in place to eliminate the small percentage of pollution caused by the Sunderland Ridge sewage treatment plant, for which the metro was responsible.
“A contractor had already been appointed who will start with upgrade work at the plant,” said Moss.
“We hope that they will already be on site this month.”
He said the Sunderland Ridge and Baviaans sewage plants would be upgraded together.
