UPDATE: Tshwane metro searching for new landfill sites

Landfill sites throughout the city will be full within a mere five years, a metro spokesperson reveals.

The metro said it was looking for possible future landfill sites to solve the city’s waste problem.

“This is quite necessary because landfill sites throughout the city will be full within a mere five years,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

The city was also completing a study – in partnership with the Gauteng Infrastructure Finance Agency – on alternative methods of waste disposal and treatment.

Mashigo said the study would be presented at the upcoming mayoral strategic planning session scheduled for February.

Meanwhile, the city has started programs of diverting recyclable waste from landfill sites.

“The most sustainable solution is to divert waste from landfills by establishing recycling infrastructure in proximity to closed landfills and at remaining operational sites.”

Mashigo admitted that illegal dumping was a big problem for the metro.

“We have an illegal dumping clearance program aimed at attending to known illegal hot spots around the city.”

“Also, we respond to illegal dumping complaints on an ad hoc basis.”

A suggestion, asking the council to approve a R3 500 reward to members of the public for helping the city in apprehending illegal dumpers, has also been tabled.

The suggestion is currently pending council approval.

Any person who wants to report illegal dumping should report it to the municipality, he said.

They must provide the following information:

– Nature and location of the debris

– Photo of the incident

– Description of offenders

– License plate numbers and description of vehicles involved

– Description of items dumped

-Time, date and location of the incident
