Illegal dumping still rife in Menlo Park

“People have their dustbins at home and a functioning garden refuse site but they still choose to dump on street corners or at the entrance of the refuse site.”

Despite attempts to reduce the rampant illegal dumping prevalent in Menlo Park, heaps of rubbish are still seen on streets.

Ward councillor Siobhan Muller said the problem was serious as it is now a daily occurrence.

“It happens every single day, this morning there was dumping in Pinaster Street along the fence on the spruit area and the sidewalk.

“It just doesn’t stop. This morning waste management was in my ward and they have cleaned up Pinaster, Maroelana, Rodericks streets, Lynnwood Road and the area around the Menlo Park post office,” said Muller.

“They are doing their best to cope with it but it is unacceptable. There are people in the area who are actually flouting the law and dumping illegally.”

She said there was no need for the rampant spate of illegal dumping as waste collection was ongoing and not being disrupted.

The cause was that residents had too much rubbish which did not fit in their dustbins and they were not prepared to pay extra for a second dustbin.

Muller added that there has also been dumping at the entrance of the garden refuse site in Menlo Park, which also occurs more than once a week.

“People have their dustbins at home and a functioning garden refuse site but they still choose to dump on street corners or at the entrance of the refuse site.”

She said people were also throwing bags of rubbish into street bins, which was not right.

“Street bins are meant for people walking, not for the rubbish you cannot fit into your dustbin.”

Anyone who wishes to report non-compliance with the bylaw including illegal disposal of waste should report it to the municipality, revealing as much as he/she can including the following information:

– Nature and location of the debris

– A photo of the incident

– Description of offenders

– Licence plate number and description of vehicles involved

– Description of items dumped

– Time, date and location of the incident witnessed.
